Establishing Nordic and global head offices
The Øresund Institute’s study “The Location of Nordic and Global Headquarters 2016” investigates where 250 of the largest companies within eleven industries have chosen to locate their head offices, all on the Forbes 2000 list.
The study shows a concentration of Nordic head offices in the Öresund and Stockholm region. The Stockholm region has the most, with 51%, whilst the Öresund region’s share is 24%. It is no coincidence that greater Malmö is clearly over represented when it comes to head quarter establishments compared to the size of the population. The advantages, especially for international companies, with the global and well educated work force, a virtually corruption free society, an excellent infrastructure and the location at the “Gateway to Scandinavia” makes for a strong business case.
One of the latest and largest relocations has been that of IKEA’s global strategic office “Hubhult”. Here many IKEA companies are being co-located in order to maximize the advantage of Malmö and the proximity to Copenhagen airport. They are joined by, among others, Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Peugeot and Orkla.
