A large-scale renewal has occurred in Malmö during the last decades – the young population and the international diversity has increased substantially. It is more attractive to creative people and knowledge intensive businesses to establish themselves here.

The profile areas

New Media
Investment in film, television, computer games, web, mobile platforms, design and advertising has created a strong potential for the creative industry in Malmö. New media and digital platforms such as mobile phones and computers are good opportunities for growth. The vision is an expansive centre where business, education and research creates growth at a high international level.

Life Science
Malmö is part of a cross-border life science cluster known as Medicon Valley employing about 40 000 persons. The valley spans the greater Copenhagen area in Denmark and the Skåne region of southern Sweden. Here you find a vast number of Scandinavia’s pharmaceutical, biotechnological and medtech industry. The hospitals, universities, public research institutions, industry and investors cooperate with one another making the region a unique environment for different kinds of life science initiatives.

The city of Malmö´s overall long-term objective is to increase the attractiveness of the area and to set Malmö on the life science map by unique events in Malmö and the region. The profile area is operated by The Medical Malmö, which is a collaboration between Lund University, Malmö University and City of Malmö. The hospitality industry

The overall goal for Malmö Tourism is to attract more visitors to Malmö. This will provide an increased economic turnover and a higher grade of employment in the hospitality industry in Malmö. The hospitality industry is very important in the terms of labour market and growth. The City of Malmö’s goal is to become a so-called Cleantech City – a city with a unique environmental profile in which economic, social and environmental sustainability interact. The local authority, together with the local business, academia and other stakeholders, aims to create an attractive place to start, run and expand businesses in the cleantech field in Malmö. The profile area is handled by Malmö Cleantech.

Trade
Malmö will continue to be developed and strengthened as a regional commercial and tourist destination. Trade has experienced a strong growth over the past ten years and employs about 20 per cent of all retail presence in Skåne. With an increasing population in Malmö and the region, a continued increased demand is expected. An attractive city, the major trading centres in the city, convention and exhibition facilities, events and entertainment will contribute.

Logistics
The North Harbour is one of the most attractive places for the establishment of logistics companies in Northern Europe. Its strategic location makes it easy to distribute incoming and outgoing goods flows. It features a modern logistics centre for ship, rail and truck transportation.
